Clearly this information age that we are now living in  requires a new type of literacy for the youngsters of today. While the foundational literacy strategies and/or skills can not be replaced, classroom teachers (especially those in the content areas) must integrate the new literacies with best practices in literacy. To do so would truly open a world of learning opportunities that more than likely was not available to them when they were young students. To not do so (to not orchestrate these learning experiences for their students) could have a direct impact on their personal and professional lives  when they enter the role of adulthood. The world is changing in this global community. On top of that information changes rapidly; cultivating and creating knowledge is a must.
